Shift Happens

on my mind

Shift happens. & we're making one.

The shift from being called a tutor to a literacy coach reflects a fundamental change in approach and mindset. While both roles involve supporting learners, the term "coach" implies a more collaborative and empowering relationship compared to "tutor." We've always had this mindset but didn't have the words to match.

  1. Mindset Shift: A tutor often suggests a one-way flow of knowledge, where the tutor imparts information to the student. Conversely, a coach implies a partnership where the emphasis is on guiding, supporting, and empowering the learner to take ownership of their learning process.

  2. Holistic Approach: Coaching extends beyond just teaching content. It encompasses understanding the individual needs, motivations, and learning styles of the learner, and it involves working collaboratively to set goals and develop strategies to achieve them.

  3. Empowerment and Independence: A coach aims to build skills that extend beyond specific subjects or tasks. The focus is on fostering critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and independence in learning. This approach empowers learners to tackle challenges beyond the scope of the sessions.

  4. Relationship Building: Coaching often involves building a strong rapport and trust between the coach, the learner, and their families. It's about creating a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and motivated.

  5. Long-Term Impact: The coaching approach tends to have a longer-lasting impact. It equips learners with skills that they can use beyond the immediate learning context, fostering lifelong learning habits.

the impact

connection: The coaching dynamic builds a connection by fostering a collaborative relationship built on trust, communication, and shared goals. It encourages open dialogue, mutual respect, and active participation from both families and children, creating a strong bond rooted in support, understanding, and a shared commitment to learning and growth.

collaboration: Families become more involved in the learning process as partners. They're encouraged to actively participate in setting goals and supporting their children's learning journey.

confidence: By fostering a supportive, collaborative, and empowering environment, the coaching dynamic focuses on building not only academic skills but also the confidence and self-belief of both families and children. This confidence, in turn, contributes significantly to the overall success and growth of the child.
